Mission & Background

Mayo Street Arts strives to strengthen its neighborhood and community by providing a haven for the arts that is vibrant, safe, and inspiring; and to engage area youths of diverse cultural communities in robust participation in the visual, performing, and literary arts.

Located in the heart of Portland’s East Bayside neighborhood – the most densely populated and ethnically diverse square mile in Maine – Mayo Street Arts has repurposed an historic church to become a unique performance venue, an exhibit and art space, and a community center for the international and creative communities of Portland.

With a dedicated group of community volunteers, supporters, and staff, the nonprofit organization has grown rapidly since its start in 2009 to offer a wide range of high quality arts programs for community and youth. Founder and Director Blainor McGough coordinates MSA’s programs and operations along with two part time staff members.

In 2013 Mayo Street Arts received a transformational gift from Cherie Wendelken, Jeb Brooks, and the Brooks Family Foundation that has opened new doors for our organization’s future. Thanks to this gift Mayo Street Arts was able to purchase our beloved building, an historic 1890’s church. We have since put a new roof on the building and are currently raising funds to complete our Building the Future Capitol Campaign to take our programming and community impact to the next level.

Through partnerships with area universities, artists, and schools, MSA provides neighborhood youths unique opportunities to learn and engage in the visual, performing, and literary arts.

Mayo Street Arts presents over 150 performances each year ranging from renowned international musicians, to world class puppet theater troupes, to local jazz, bluegrass, and rock shows.

Current programs include:

  • Future Artists of Portland
  • International Heritage Music Series
  • Club Hip Hop
  • The Children’s Puppet Workshop
  • Neighborhood Crime Watch
