MSA is thrilled to announce the third exhibition at the MSA Pop-Up Gallery featuring work by painter Patt Franklin! The show runs April 1 – April 24 with an Opening Reception on Thursday, April 1 from 1-4pm. Note that masks and social distancing required, 15 persons max at any one time per Maine CDC guidelines.
Patt Franklin paints in lush, sequential, otherworldly abstract forms, conjuring rainforests, seaweed, leaves, caves, and other beings of the natural world.
“Patt Franklin was a hot-shot potter who initially came to Maine to teach at Haystack” says June Fitzpatrick, the show curator. “She came with her husband and daughter and stayed on to lead the ceramics program as Professor of Art at the University of Maine Gorham for 30 years.”
Franklin has exhibited locally and internationally, with one person exhibitions at Tulane University in New Orleans, the Ogunquit Museum of American Art in Maine, Wheelock College in Boston, and Bates College in Maine. Her work has also been included in group exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Crafts in New York City; Cornell University in Ithaca, New York; The Drawing Gallery in London, England; Elon University in North Carolina; Montclair University in New Jersey; Ratliff Gallery in Sedona, AZ, and the Portland Museum of Art in Portland, ME.
“During the many years I have been making art, one thing that is constant is working in series,” says Franklin. “That for me can mean making a number of related works in sequence, or over time, coming back to work to continue where I left off months ago or even years later.”
This will be our final show at the MSA Pop-Up Gallery. MSA has been exhibiting art at the 67 Washington Avenue location since January as a way to stay connected with the public while the center at 10 Mayo Street is closed for ADA renovations. Thanks to all who have attended. We hope to see you in April and celebrate the work of Patt Franklin!
