Gilded Roots, Native Grace opening September 7th 2012 at Mayo Street Arts in Portland, 5-8 pm. Edwige Charlot and Rachel Gloria show prints, paintings, textiles, and an installation inspired by botanicals, cityspaces, and religious iconography. This two month exhibition by artists Edwige Charlot and Rachel Gloria Manly features new prints, paintings, textiles and installations. Ranging from botanicals, cityspaces, religious iconography to patterns, these works are inspired by the intersection visual narratives and personal history.

Edwige Charlot was born to Haitian parents and raised in Paris, France. Charlot emigrated to the United States as a child and settled in New England. She studied printmaking at the Lyme Academy of Fine Arts in Lyme, Connecticut and received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Maine College of Art. Charlot has exhibited her work in Maine at Whitney Art Works, Issac Dyer Gallery and Space Gallery. In 2011, she was awarded a Maine Arts Commission Good Idea Grant. She has been an artist resident at  the Maine College of Art, Quimby Colony in Portland, Maine and the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, Vermont. Charlot lives and works in Portland, Maine.

Rachel Gloria Manly studied at Maine College of Art. At Maine College of Art, Manly’s primary focus was printmaking with emphasis on textile design. Manly has exhibited her work in Portland’s ICA, Harvard’s old library, Art and Cloth, the Fenn School and most recently concluded a solo exhibition entitled “Garden Skyline” at 475 Fore Street where she was the artist in residency. Manly currently resides in Boston, Massachusetts.
