Children’s Puppet Workshop Spring 2012

The Childrens Puppet Workshop is an arts and humanities workshop for East Bayside kids. This year Mayo Street Arts has partnered with LearningWorks  to make the program available to a greater number of neighborhood kids. Students will make puppets and learn drumming and dance! 30 to 40 kids from the neighborhood will:

-Make rod puppets with puppeteer Zach Rohman of Motionfolk Puppet Theater

-Learn West African dance with skilled dancer Marita Kennedy-Castro

-Study Cuban drumming with musician Dylan Blanchard of OLAS

-Make backdrops and costumes with Maine College of Art education students

-Attend Saturday morning puppet shows by professional puppet theaters held at Mayo Street Arts

-Perform in a community puppet-music-dance show:  ‘River of Time’, at Mayo Street Arts and the Portland Public Library

-Have their work exhibited as part of the First Friday artwalk at Mayo Street Arts.

Youths are recommended for the workshop through East Bayside Neighborhood Association, the Kennedy Park Tenant Council and the Portland Community Policing Center. The program is made possible in part  by grants from the Virginia Hodgkins Somers Foundation,  Portland Police, and Coffee By Design. More pics are on our photo site HERE.
