Fall 2021 Dance Classes: September-November

Flamenco School with Lindsey Bourassa &

West African Dance with Embody the Rhythm

Get ready to get on your feet with weekly dance classes at MSA! We are excited to offer on-site, in-person Flamenco School with Lindsey Bourassa and West African Dance with Embody the Rhythm this fall.

Based in Portland, Maine, Lindsey Bourassa is a flamenco dancer, choreographer, and teacher with a Master of Flamencology Degree from Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya (Barcelona, Spain) and a Certificate of Professionalization in Flamenco Arts from El Centro de Arte y Flamenco de Sevilla (Seville, Spain). She has performed and taught in both Spain and the United States and currently teaches Flamenco as part of the Bates College Dance Department in Lewiston, Maine.

Lindsey performs traditional flamenco with national and international flamenco artists, as well as her own original contemporary-flamenco works that illustrate multimedia, multi-genre storytelling, often woven together with her own creative prose.

Embody the Rhythm‘s Marita Kennedy-Castro is a dancer, choreographer, embodied movement guide and community builder residing in the Wabanaki Confederacy territory we call Maine under colonization.

Teaching since 2003, Marita shares from over 20 years of study under master West African dance artists, both around the U.S. and in Guinea, West Africa. She earned the blessing from internationally renowned Guinean artist Youssouf Koumbassa to become a teacher of the form herself. She is founder of Embody the Rhythm and co-director, choreographer and performer of New Moon Ensemble.

Marita is passionate about building community centered in transformative love and justice through her classes, collaborative arts productions, discussions and performances. She is inspired to help others find their movement freedom and believes movement is medicine we all need. As an intercultural bridge-builder, Marita regularly hosts West African artists to her homelands to expand her students’ experience and cultural understanding.

No one will be turned away for lack of funds; contact MSA at 207-879-4629 or info@mayostreetarts.org for information on our sliding scale admission policy.
